All media messages – TV shows, newspapers, movies, advertisements, etc. – are made or constructed by people. One of the most important media literacy skills is deconstruction – closely examining and “taking apart” media messages to understand how they work.
Step #1: Click on the "Deconstructing Techniques" button below. Open the "Sample Media Analysis" file located on the right hand side of the page to develop an understanding of how to deconstruct a message.
Step #2: Download the "Media Analysis Graphic Organizer." Select an advertisement from below to deconstruct. Type your responses in the file, then attach the file to an email and send to Mr. Houston.
Step #3: Click on the "Task #1 Drop-Down Tab." Select "Deconstructing Media Messages Blog." Describe a media message that you deconstructed outside of school and post to blog. Explain how your knowledge of deconstructing techniques has helped you interpret hidden meaning/motive of the media message.
